Sample Writing Task -2 asked on 21st May (GT Essay)

Some people say parents should give pocket money to their children while others say that children waste the money so it is not required. Discuss both the views and give your opinion.

The children of the contemporary world enjoy various privileges in terms of quality education, financial independence, world class medical assistance and sophisticated gadgets and gizmos for comfortable living. Many opine that it is beneficial to give small money to spend in schools at children’s own discretion. Whereas, the note of dissent against this notion also exists. This essay will throw light on the pros and cons of both opinions along with my personal views.

To begin with, the possession of pocket money makes the children behave confidently. The decision making skills are developed. The small cash in hand teaches the young people to make right choices enabling them to spend money wisely. This skill acquired at tender age helps in handling complex financial issues successfully in later years of life.  Besides this, children do not get inferiority complex which otherwise may overpower them if their friends bring some coins to spend in school canteen and they do not have. This emotional stability ensures the strong foundation of the personality. Thus, giving petty cash to young boys and girls to use with their own wish helps them.

Alternatively, the chances of money wastage are also observed if the money is given frequently. The hard earned money of parents may be spent without many deliberations to buy toys, accessories and other tit-bits. This may make toddlers spendthrifts in their grown up years. Additionally, the health is also put on stake when children spend money to eat out. They may develop stomach infection, diarrhoea and other contagious diseases resulting in frequent illness eventually affecting their studies. Hence, the money given in abundance and without supervision may have negative impact on growing minds.

To conclude, it is drawn that the financial independence given to children at tender age makes them wise in later years of life. They learn to handle the money matters efficiently. However, as excess of everything is bad so giving more cash than needed may spoil the habits. I think a shrewd attitude of the elders in the family to handle these money matters will have more positive outcomes.
