Waiariki Institute of Technology
Established in 1978, Waiariki is one of the largest tertiary institutes outside the university centers. Originally developed as a centre for adult and trades education, Waiariki has been offering quality vocational studies for 29 years. Waiariki has a student population of around 9,000 full- and part-time students, of which 200 of these are from overseas. Waiariki began to offer bachelor degree Programmes in the early 1990s.
Waiariki is the only New Zealand government-owned (public) tertiary education institution fully based in the Waiariki region which offers courses across campuses in Rotorua, Taupo, Tokoroa and Whakatane.
Waiariki Institute of Technology is the key tertiary provider in the Bay of Plenty. Located in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful regions, our five campuses provide a tertiary education for between 6,000 and 10,000 New Zealand students, and approximately 1,300 international students.
We offer a high quality education that can lead toward a range of careers in such areas as agriculture, business, communications, early childhood education, forestry, hospitality, information technology (IT), Māori studies, nursing and health, sport management, and tourism.
Being situated in a region of such natural beauty provides plenty of opportunities to wind down, or up, depending on your adrenalin needs. Some of these activities include mountain biking, whitewater and flatwater kayaking, horseback-riding, hiking, soaking in hot pools, and bungy jumping.
Waiariki has a national reputation for our Forestry, Tourism, Hospitality and Nursing Programmes. Waiariki has strong links to local and national training and governmental bodies ensuring students obtain relevant and job-ready qualifications when they graduate. Waiariki is known for its high level of student support and prides itself on ensuring that the needs of its students are met with the provision of its excellent services and facilities. The institution offers a small classroom environment, maximizing individual attention and learning. Tutorial support is also available in many forms.
