IELTS,a language proficiency test, is one of the fastest growing English tests in the world. It is a challenging examination that measures your ability to communicate in English from international standard for people who intend to study or work abroad. Because of the diverse skills required to attain a high score, students who dedicate themselves to extensive IELTS preparation have a tremendous advantages over their lesser-equipped counterparts.

IELTS scores are accepted as a proof of your English language skills by more than 9,000 organizations-including universities, colleges and professional organizations in various countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, UK and South Africa.

IELTS is conducted 4 times a month by IDP supervised by ESOL University of Cambridge. Anyone who has a valid passport and wants to go abroad can appear in IELTS as many times as he wants, but minimum age for those are appearing in the test is 16 years. The result is received after 13 days of examination. The test score is valid for 2 years. Candidates can go for reevaluation if they are not satisfied with the scores.

IELTS Test Format

IELTS has two versions : IELTS academic and IELTS general training. The former test is taken by candidates aspiring to study abroad ,while the latter is taken by those who apply for work visa and permanent residency.

There are four modules assessed in IELTS ( ACADEMIC, GT ) : listening, reading, writing & speaking. The first three modules are conducted on the same day, however, speaking test is taken on an alternate day. The dates are given by IDP, to know the dates click on the link

Listening: (40 minutes)

This is divided into 4 parts, each part has 10 questions of different types based on conversations and monologues. Candidates listen to recordings for 30 minutes, but they listen these only once, and afterwards they are given 10 minutes to transfer their answers on the answer sheet. The recordings are of native speakers and various accents are used

Reading:(60 minutes) (ACADEMIC)

The reading focuses on skills like understanding an argument identifying a writer's opinion, attitude, or purpose, and comprehending ideas, and suggested meanings in texts. Your proficiency in skimming, scanning, and detailed reading to grasp the essence of the text is critically evaluated.

There are 3 long passages and 40 questions to answer. Each passage has more than one question type. The question types can be repeated in passages . The text is taken from articles, general essays, forums and magazines.

Reading: (60 minutes) (GT)

Two tasks are given to write here : Task 1 and Task 2.

  • Task 1 (ACADEMIC) : You are asked to report the data from a diagram into 150 words at least. There are distinct types of diagrams such as bar chart, table, line graph, map, process and flow chart. You may get one or more diagrams at once and describe the data by making either comparisons or showing contrasts.
  • Task 1 (GT) : You are presented with a scenario where you need to compose a letter to either request information from someone or elucidate the current situation. The tone of the letter may vary, ranging from personal to semi-formal or formal, depending on the context and intended recipient.
  • Task 2 : You are given an essay to write which is based on arguments and opinion. Minimum 250 words are written at least to answer. The topics are of general interests.

Speaking: (11 to 14 minutes)

In this test, you answers question based on familiar and unfamiliar topics. It is conducted to check skills: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, pronunciation and grammatical range and accuracy. Speaking test is divided into 3 parts

  • Part 1: Introduction and Interview (4-5 minutes) :

    In this part, the IELTS examiner will initiate the conversation by introducing themselves and confirming your identity. You'll then be asked to introduce yourself, providing information about your background, such as family, studies, work, and interests. The examiner will ask you some general questions to get to know you better and to establish a comfortable atmosphere for the rest of the speaking test.

  • Part 2: Individual Long Turn (3-4 minutes) :

    For this part, the examiner will provide you with a task card containing a topic and several points that you may discuss in your speech. You'll have one minute to prepare your thoughts and make some notes on the given topic using a paper and pencil provided by the examiner. After the preparation time, you'll be asked to speak on the topic for one to two minutes, covering the points provided on the task card. Following your speech, the examiner may ask you some follow-up questions related to the topic to further assess your speaking ability.

  • Part 3: Two-way Discussion (4-5 minutes) :

    In this final part of the speaking test, the examiner will engage you in a more detailed discussion related to the topic provided in Part 2. The questions in this section may involve evaluation, prediction, explanation, suggestions, speculation, or other similar prompts. You'll have the opportunity to expand on your ideas, provide examples, and express your opinions on various aspects of the topic. The examiner may also challenge your responses by asking probing questions to gauge your ability to sustain a conversation and communicate effectively in English. This part aims to assess your ability to engage in spontaneous dialogue and demonstrate fluency, coherence, and linguistic accuracy in your responses.

Q1: When should I start IELTS preparation?
A: Ideally, a student should start preparing at least 8-10 weeks prior to taking the test.
Q2: For which IELTS version should I go for?
A: There are two versions of IELTS - Academic and General Training. If you want to study in an English speaking country for higher studies you must take the Academic test. But if your purpose is to go for work or emigration purposes you should take IELTS General Training.
Q3: At what age one can appear in IELTS test?
A: The test taker must be above sixteen years of age and must have a valid passport to appear in the IELTS test.
Q4: When can I take IELTS test?
A: IELTS is conducted four times in a month. You should book your seat well in advance.
Q5: What is the passing score for this test?
A: There is no passing score as the band is scaled 0-9. The band score depends on your performance in the exam.
Q6: How soon and for how many times can I retake the IELTS test?
A: There is no such limit imposed on retaking of the test. One can appear as many times as they want. But it is always advised to prepare thoroughly as there will not be big changes in exams after a few reappearances, instead, it's better to prepare again and take the test.
Q7: Is the IELTS test completed in one day?
A: No, The Listening, Reading and Writing components of the test are always completed on the same day in one sitting. The timings will be the same in the Paper-based or computer-based test. The Speaking test may be taken up to 7 days before or 7 days after the test date.
Q8: Who takes the IELTS Speaking test?
A: The Speaking test is a conversation with a certified IELTS examiner. The Speaking test is part three of three parts. It is between 11-14 minutes long.
Q9: How is IELTS Writing Marked?
A: Examiners and clerks mark both your first and second part of criterion areas: Task Achievement (for Task 1), Task Response (for Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range & Accuracy.
